New Delhi, Aug 7 (BAN/CD): Veteran BJP leader Sushma Swaraj passed away on Tuesday due to cardiac arrest in New Delhi. Although her death evoked grief and sorrow throughout the nation, the one who would be most affected by this is Swaraj Kaushal. As her husband of 44 years, Swaraj Kaushal was Sushma Swaraj’s fellow lawyer, friend and biggest supporter.
The love story, that started in their college days was revealed to the public when the former Minister of External Affairs said she wanted to quit active politics to spend more time with her husband.
She had been working despite her prolonged hospitalisation and severe medical condition, which is why Swaraj Kaushal expressed his happiness on Twitter when she decided not to contest in the 2019 Lok Sabha election.
"Madam I am running behind you for the last 46 years. I am no longer a 19-year-old. Please, I am also running out of breath. Thank you," Swaraj Kaushal had said. The two of them met while studying in Delhi University, and despite belonging to two different ideological groups, they formed a connection that resulted in a long, happy marriage.
The fellow lawyers in Supreme Court then worked together as part of a team of lawyers who contested the case of George Fernandes during the Emergency days of the Indira Gandhi regime.
The couple got married on July 13 1975, when the Emergency was at its peak. They had celebrated 44 years of their marriage last month before her death on August 6.
Both their families raised objections to this union. Sushma Swaraj hailed from an orthodox Haryana family. She went on to take her husband’s name as her last name.
The couple have a daughter, Bansuri Swaraj who also took after her parent’s profession and is now a lawyer.
Sushma Swaraj had spent four terms in Lok Sabha, three terms in Rajya Sabha and she had been elected to state assemblies thrice.
She quit active politics and excused herself from contesting the 2019 Lok Sabha elections owing to her ailing health.
In her last public appearance, Sushma Swaraj attended the swearing-in ceremony of the Modi government at the Rashtrapati Bhavan.
