London 8 January 2020 - Surprise, surprise, Sony the electronics supremo, is making cars. Well not really, but it is showcasing a concept car at the CES 2020 technology show in Las Vegas.
The prototype car showcases imaging and sensing technologies contributing towards autonomous driving systems and in car safety and monitoring abilities. As well as, of course, advanced in-car entertainment features.
Creating a 'safety cocoon' with 33 sensors on 'Vision-S' concept car the Sony systems work together to detect 360 degrees around the vehicle with high definition and high dynamic range image sensors designed to recognise objects; solid state LiDAR to measure distances to objects and build up a 3D model of its surroundings; and even sensors to detect and recognise people and objects in the car to optimise the infotainment and control interface.
Talking of infotainment, there are speakers built-in to the seats and up front there is a full-length screen. The car also utilises Sony's AI, telecommunication and cloud technologies for connectivity and to update its apps and systems.
