Colombo, Nov 08 (BAN/ AD): The new Army Headquarters complex at Akuregoda, Pelawatta was inaugurated by President Maithripala Sirisena on Friday morning. President praised the armed forces role in the nation's economic development. He said the services given by the armed forces and the police should be commended.
The complex is situated in 77 acre area and is new state of the art defense building. Its location is Akuregoda, Pelawatta. The new facility will have all defense forces at one location, will house the Ministry of Defense and the Army, Navy and Air Force Headquarters.
The cost of project is Rs. 53.3 billion is equipped with the latest state-of-the-art technology and armed with latest hi-tech security systems. President Sirisena on his arrival at the opening of the newly built Army Headquarters was greeted with military honors.
During the opening 'Sevabhimani Medal' was symbolically awarded to the staff of the tri-forces and police who worked for more than six years. The President also presented medals to Defense Secretary Shantha Kottegoda, Army Commander Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva, Navy Commander Vice Admiral Piyal de Silva, Air Force Commander Air Marshal Sumangala Dias and Acting Inspector General of Police CD Wickramaratne.
