Freedom fighter Sadeque Hossain Khoka passes away in New York

New York, Nov 04 (BAN/ AD): On Monday early morning freedom fighter Sadeque Hossain Khoka passed away in New York. He was admitted to a hospital on October 18. He was former mayor of undivided Dhaka City Corporation (DCC) and freedom fighter. He died around 1:50pm (Bangladesh time) on Monday.

His death was confirmed by BNP chairperson's press wing official Shairul Kabir Khan. He said "There are some issues with the paperwork, which is making it difficult to bring the body back.” He also added "BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir will decide on the party's attempt to bring the body back, once he returns from Jessore."

He was getting treatment at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. On November 2, Khoka's son Ishraque Hossain said his father's condition was very critical and doctors had stopped providing cancer treatment to him.

He started his political journey through Moulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhasani's National Awami Party (NAP). Later he joined BNP, and was made the party's Dhaka city unit president. He was elected MP in 1991 from Sutrapur-Kotwali seat, and subsequently made state minister for youth and sports. He was re elected in 2001 and given the charge of the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock. Later, he contested Dhaka City Corporation election in 2002 and was elected mayor. He held the post for nearly nine years.

He went to the USA on May 14, 2014 and has been receiving treatment there since then.
